Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has announced the thwarting of an alleged Russian-backed assassination plot targeting a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw. Tusk highlighted the unprecedented nature of the case, marking it as the first known attempt by a Russian-linked actor to attack a U.S. citizen on the soil of another NATO member. The intended target, identified by Polish officials, is a U.S. citizen of Ukrainian descent, perceived by the Russian government as a threat.
On August 7, Polish authorities arrested a suspect accused of being recruited by Russian intelligence services. The individual is currently in custody for a period of three months. This operation was executed with the collaboration of U.S. intelligence agencies, as stated by the Polish minister responsible for overseeing intelligence services. The incident highlights the growing concerns in Europe regarding alleged Russian operations aimed at political adversaries, supporters of Ukraine, and others considered hostile by Moscow.
