In a bold diplomatic maneuver, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has gifted her Nobel Peace Prize medal to U.S. President Donald Trump. The presentation occurred during a private meeting at the White House on Thursday. Machado later spoke to reporters, framing the gift as recognition for Trump’s “unique commitment” to the cause of liberty in Venezuela.

President Trump has long made his fascination with the Nobel Peace Prize known, frequently arguing that he deserves the accolade. Machado’s decision to hand over her medal plays directly into this ambition, although it does not officially confer the title upon him. The Norwegian Nobel Committee reiterated that the prize is non-transferable and that the status of the laureate is permanent, regardless of the medal’s location.

Machado deepened the significance of the event by drawing on the history of the Americas. She recounted how the Marquis de Lafayette, a key figure in the American Revolution, had supported Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Venezuela. She described her gift as the “people of Bolivar” giving back to the United States after two centuries, cementing a symbolic bond between the two nations’ leaderships.

The meeting comes at a time when Trump’s support for Machado has been tepid at best. He has previously described her as lacking the “respect” required to command Venezuela and has explored working with interim president Delcy Rodriguez to satisfy U.S. energy demands. Trump’s strategy has involved threatening force against Rodriguez to ensure compliance, suggesting a pragmatic rather than ideological approach to the region.

Despite these underlying tensions and Trump’s dismissal of her leadership credentials, Machado emerged from the White House with a positive message. She characterized the hour-long discussion as “great” and insisted that Trump is empathetic to the suffering of her people. Her public stance suggests a determination to align herself with Washington, regardless of the President’s skepticism.
