This summer’s intense heatwaves across Europe have resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with the true figure likely much higher as countries continue to finalize their evaluations. Germany, France, and Spain are the hardest hit, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany alone has experienced around 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking its deadliest summer for heat since record-keeping began. Meanwhile, Spain has registered close to 5,000 heat-attributed deaths since May, setting a new national record.

France has reported approximately 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July. This figure is still tentative as it excludes data from August. Other nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also observed significant mortality spikes during periods of extreme heat. These heatwaves have repeatedly driven temperatures past 40°C in extensive areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records.

According to scientists, climate change is a key factor in the increasing frequency and severity of extreme heat events. Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging, as high temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being directly cited as the cause of death. The indirect impact of these conditions highlights the broader public health risks associated with rising temperatures.

Experts anticipate that the overall death toll across Europe will increase as more delayed mortality data is processed and as figures for August become available. The staggering number of deaths underscores the urgent need for public health strategies to address the heightened risks posed by more frequent and severe heatwaves. Governments and health organizations are urged to consider these developments seriously as they plan for future climate-related challenges.
