The European Commission has approved a significant aid package worth €170 million to support Bulgarian farmers grappling with escalating fuel and fertiliser costs. This financial assistance is a response to the economic strains intensified by the ongoing Middle East crisis, which has contributed to rising input costs for agricultural producers.

The aid will be distributed as direct grants to farmers, with individual companies eligible to receive up to €50,000. The funding must be allocated by December 31, 2026, providing a crucial lifeline for farmers over the coming years as they navigate these financial challenges.

This latest aid package follows a similar initiative approved in 2024, when approximately €169 million was allocated to assist Bulgarian farmers affected by higher energy costs and the economic impacts of the war in Ukraine. These state aid schemes underline the European Commission’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector amid ongoing economic uncertainties.

Bulgarian farmers have faced significant challenges due to fluctuating global markets and geopolitical tensions, which have driven up the costs of essential resources like fuel and fertilisers. The approved state aid is intended to alleviate some of these pressures, helping to ensure the sustainability of agricultural operations and the stability of the food supply chain.

The European Commission’s decision highlights the urgent need for targeted financial support to assist farmers in managing the repercussions of external economic factors. This aid package is a part of broader efforts to bolster the resilience of the agricultural sector across the European Union.
