Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has embarked on his first official trip to Russia since securing re-election, attending the annual Innoprom industrial exhibition held in Yekaterinburg. During this visit, he engaged in talks with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, aiming to address various concerns impacting the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

This visit occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions, primarily due to Russia’s recent imposition of restrictions on several Armenian imports. These measures, justified by Russia on health and safety grounds, have been a point of contention for Armenia, which argues that they have adversely affected its economic stability and trade prospects.

While acknowledging the existence of ongoing issues, Pashinyan emphasized Armenia’s dedication to sustaining a robust relationship with Russia. He reiterated Armenia’s commitment to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), underscoring the importance of dialogue in resolving outstanding challenges between the two countries.

The diplomatic relations between Armenia and Russia have faced additional strain following the 2023 conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite these challenges, Armenia continues to engage in discussions with Moscow while simultaneously exploring closer ties with the European Union. Pashinyan expressed optimism that the ongoing talks with Russia would contribute to alleviating key concerns and fostering a more stable partnership.
