The European Union is set to bolster its ties with Azerbaijan through a significant financial commitment, as announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. During her meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, von der Leyen revealed that the EU would be providing up to €200 million in grants aimed at enhancing transport, energy, and digital infrastructure. This initiative is anticipated to stimulate up to €2 billion in both public and private investment, signaling a robust push towards regional development.
A key focus of the discussions between von der Leyen and Aliyev centered on bolstering energy cooperation and improving regional connectivity. The talks also touched on the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process, highlighting the EU’s interest in fostering stability and collaboration in the South Caucasus region. In a bid to enhance these ties further, von der Leyen proposed the establishment of a new EU-Azerbaijan connectivity partnership, underscoring the strategic importance of Azerbaijan as an energy partner.
The energy dynamics between the EU and Azerbaijan have significantly evolved, with Aliyev noting a substantial 65% increase in Azerbaijani gas exports to EU member states since the 2022 energy agreement. This development has seen 10 EU countries now relying on Azerbaijani gas, underlining the pivotal role Azerbaijan plays in the EU’s energy diversification strategy.
In addition to the infrastructure grants, von der Leyen announced a €20 million support program specifically targeting border communities. This initiative will focus on boosting healthcare services, conducting mine clearance operations, fostering rural development, and supporting small businesses, thereby enhancing the quality of life in these strategic areas.
Von der Leyen’s visit to the region is set to continue with talks in Armenia, demonstrating the EU’s commitment to engaging with key partners in the South Caucasus.
