In light of increasing travel disruptions, airlines and airports across Europe are urging the EU to temporarily halt its recently implemented biometric border check system during the busy summer months. The call for suspension is fueled by reports of passengers enduring wait times of up to five hours at border controls, leading to flights departing with numerous empty seats as travelers remain stuck in lengthy queues.
The biometric system, which began its phased introduction in October, mandates non-EU visitors to submit fingerprints and facial images upon entry. However, the rollout has encountered significant operational challenges, prompting some airlines to delay flights in hopes of accommodating passengers caught up in the checks. As a result, industry representatives are appealing to the European Commission for a temporary pause of these checks in July and August, specifically during periods when passenger volumes surpass the processing capacity of border controls.
Several nations have already experienced hitches in the new system’s implementation, with some choosing to scale back or halt biometric procedures to avoid exacerbating the situation during the peak travel season. These disruptions have raised concerns that prolonged delays could tarnish the reputation of Europe’s tourism sector and international travel appeal, especially as airports gear up for an influx of millions more passengers over the summer.
Industry groups are underscoring the necessity for enhanced staffing levels, improved technology, and dependable automated systems to ensure the biometric checks can function efficiently without significant interruptions. Without these measures in place, they warn, the current approach could continue to pose substantial challenges to both travelers and the wider travel industry in Europe.
