Spain Utilizes E-Visa Technology for Travel Access to Eight African Nations

In a significant development, Spain is set to waive visa requirements for travelers holding ordinary passports from eight African nations starting in 2026. This initiative will permit eligible individuals to visit Spain for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The countries benefiting from this visa exemption include Botswana, Cabo Verde, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, and Seychelles.

The decision aims to enhance tourism, business travel, and cultural interactions between the European and African continents. While the visa waiver applies to short-term visits for tourism, business, or familial visits, it maintains the necessity for travelers to satisfy standard entry prerequisites. These requirements include possessing a valid passport, and potentially providing evidence of accommodation, sufficient financial means, and return or onward travel arrangements if requested by authorities.

Importantly, this exemption does not extend to employment, long-term educational pursuits, or permanent relocation in Spain. Individuals planning to work or study will still need to obtain the relevant visa or residence permit to fulfill these objectives. The initiative underscores Spain’s commitment to fostering closer ties with African nations while maintaining necessary controls for longer-term stays.

Despite this progressive step, South Africa is notably absent from the list of nations granted visa-free access. Consequently, South African passport holders must continue to secure a Schengen visa for short stays in Spain, as well as for most other destinations within the Schengen Zone.
