Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has firmly dismissed claims of extensive corruption within his Socialist party following the sentencing of a former senior aide in a significant graft case. The case involves allegations linked to government contracts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Addressing parliament, Sanchez insisted that his political opponents and critics are attempting to fabricate a narrative of a widespread corruption crisis. He denied any knowledge of or involvement in illegal activities related to the former transport minister, Jose Luis Abalos, who recently received a 24-year prison sentence for corruption charges.
This controversy has heightened scrutiny on Sanchez’s government, with multiple investigations underway, including those involving former associates and members of his own family. A court has also proceeded with a trial involving his wife, Begona Gomez, centered around allegations of influence peddling.
Sanchez defended the integrity of his administration, acknowledging that errors can occur but emphasizing his commitment to continue governing rather than stepping down. He accused his adversaries of exploiting these investigations to undermine his leadership.
Despite calls from opposition parties for his resignation and demands for early elections, Sanchez has reiterated his intention to remain in office until the completion of his term in 2027.
