The combined military might of the United States and Israel has been brought to bear on Iran in what analysts are calling the most significant military operation in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq War. Over the past seven days, the two allies have systematically targeted Iran’s military command structure, missile capabilities, and naval assets, while simultaneously battling Iranian-backed forces in Lebanon.
President Trump has been explicit about the endgame, declaring on social media that nothing short of Iran’s unconditional surrender would end the offensive. At the White House, he urged ordinary Iranians to help “take back your country,” promising immunity to those who turned against the clerical regime and warning of “absolutely guaranteed death” for those who did not. The comments underscored the administration’s stated objective of regime change.
The military operations have been relentless. American B-2 stealth bombers dropped dozens of massive penetrating bombs on deeply buried Iranian missile infrastructure, while a large Iranian warship used as a drone platform was struck and possibly sunk. On the Lebanese front, Israel issued its most sweeping evacuation orders to date, forcing over one million people out of their homes and effectively emptying large sections of Beirut.
Iran retaliated across a wide geographic front, firing missiles and drones at Gulf states hosting US military bases. Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain all reported incoming fire, with several successfully intercepting the attacks. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also continued launching missiles at Israeli territory, citing retaliation for strikes on residential buildings in Tel Aviv. Hezbollah maintained its rocket campaign in southern Lebanon despite massive Israeli pressure.
The war’s toll continues to mount. At least 1,230 Iranians have been confirmed dead, while six American soldiers have been killed. In Lebanon, 217 people have died and nearly 800 have been wounded since hostilities resumed. The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon reported that its Ghanaian battalion headquarters was struck, wounding two soldiers critically and destroying their barracks.
