Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare structure that will eliminate the inclusion of free overhead cabin baggage for its lowest-priced tickets on short and medium-haul routes. This change is part of an overarching strategy by the Lufthansa Group, which also encompasses Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti.
Currently, passengers who opt for the Economy Light fare are allowed to bring both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, the new entry-level fare, named Economy Basic, will restrict travelers to only carrying a small personal item that can be stowed under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack. Those who wish to bring a larger cabin suitcase will need to either purchase a higher fare category or pay an additional fee.
Beginning April 28, this fare adjustment will be tested for flights departing from May 19 on select routes. If the trial proves successful, Brussels Airlines plans to extend the new fare structure across its European network. This initiative is aimed at offering greater flexibility, allowing passengers who travel light to benefit from lower fares. Nevertheless, passengers accustomed to carrying cabin luggage might find minimal difference in overall costs once baggage fees are factored in.
The policy change is expected to significantly affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who typically rely on cabin luggage to avoid checked baggage fees and reduce airport waiting times. Travelers are encouraged to thoroughly review fare conditions before booking and to compare the total travel cost, including baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the advertised ticket price.
For those traveling with only a personal item, the new fare could present savings. However, for many others, the most economical ticket option may no longer equate to the lowest total travel cost, prompting a reassessment of what constitutes the best deal when flying with Brussels Airlines.
