Manchester City’s pursuit of the Premier League title suffered another setback on Wednesday as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at home. The result represents the third consecutive league match without a victory for the champions, who now trail Arsenal by five points with the Gunners set to face Liverpool next.

Erling Haaland’s penalty four minutes before halftime seemed to have set City on course for a much-needed victory. The Norwegian converted from 12 yards after Jeremy Doku was fouled by Diego Gomez, with the decision confirmed following a VAR check. The goal was particularly significant as it marked Haaland’s 150th for Manchester City while also ending his three-match scoring drought and bringing his Premier League tally for the season to 20 goals.

City appeared determined to build on their advantage after the restart, with Bernardo Silva nearly doubling the lead when he intercepted a misplaced Brighton pass. However, his shot struck the woodwork, and Brighton remained within touching distance. The match’s intensity increased when a heated confrontation erupted between City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper, leading to both players being booked.

The turning point came in the 60th minute when Kaoru Mitoma produced a moment of brilliance to restore parity. The Japanese winger collected a pass from the flank, composed himself on the edge of the penalty area, and dispatched a precise low shot into the far corner of the net, beating Donnarumma convincingly.

Brighton seized the initiative after equalizing, controlling possession and building attacks methodically. They nearly completed a remarkable comeback when Mitoma turned creator, finding Gomez in a dangerous position inside the box. The midfielder’s shot was saved by Donnarumma, and Mitoma’s rebound attempt from near the goal line struck the post. In the final moments, Haaland had a clear opportunity to secure victory when he broke through Brighton’s defense, but Verbruggen produced an excellent save to deny the striker and secure a valuable point for the visitors.
